Tired of Mowing

The Challenge

The owners decided to stay in their home for retirement and did not enjoy maintaining a lawn. They wanted to incorporate food crops and native plants into the new landscape as well as create a visual screen from the street. They wanted to keep the existing concrete path as well as create pathways through the garden. They had quite a lot of plant material that needed moving to more appropriate locations and could be divided to increase the number of plants available.

The Design

The slope was regraded, and many large boulders were added for erosion control and interest. We incorporated native plants, herbs, food bearing plants and ornamentals in the new garden, and connected different areas with mulch and stone pathways. The lawn area under the mature trees was sheet mulched and covered in wood chips to conserve moisture and prevent weeds from growing.
